Rep. Abraham "Abe" Jones serves as the Democratic representative for North Carolina House District 38, covering parts of Wake County. A lifelong advocate for justice and equity, Jones brings a distinguished legal career and a deep commitment to public service to the General Assembly. Born and raised in Wilson, North Carolina, he earned his undergraduate and law degrees from Harvard University, graduating in 1974 and 1977, respectively. His impressive legal background spans decades, including work as a federal prosecutor, an attorney with the North Carolina Attorney General’s Office, and later, as an Administrative Law Judge.
In 1995, Jones was appointed by Governor Jim Hunt to serve as a North Carolina Superior Court judge, a position he held until 2012. During his tenure, he presided over complex civil and criminal cases, earning a reputation for fairness, integrity, and a commitment to upholding the law. After leaving the bench, Jones continued his legal work in private practice, focusing on civil rights, employment law, and public interest cases. His dedication to justice and advocacy for marginalized communities led him to seek public office, and he was elected to the North Carolina House in 2020.
As a legislator, Jones prioritizes criminal justice reform, public education, affordable housing, and economic equity. He works to ensure that every child in North Carolina has access to a high-quality education, advocating for increased funding for public schools and better teacher pay. His background in the judiciary has made him a key voice on issues of law enforcement accountability and sentencing reform. Additionally, he champions policies that expand affordable housing options and create pathways for economic mobility, particularly for historically underserved communities. With a strong legal foundation and a deep passion for justice, Jones continues to fight for policies that create a fairer and more prosperous North Carolina.
