Rep. Monika Johnson-Hostler serves as the Democratic representative for North Carolina's House District 33, encompassing parts of Wake County. A lifelong advocate and policy leader, she has dedicated over two decades to addressing sexual violence and promoting educational equity. Before her election to the General Assembly, Johnson-Hostler served as the Executive Director of the North Carolina Coalition Against Sexual Assault (NCCASA), where she led statewide efforts to support survivors and implement preventive measures. Her leadership extended nationally as the board president of the National Alliance Ending Sexual Violence, representing 56 state and territorial sexual assault coalitions and 1,500 rape crisis centers.
In 2013, Johnson-Hostler was elected to the Wake County Public School System Board, becoming only the third African American woman to hold this position in its 40-year history. During her tenure, she provided fiscal oversight for a $1.65 billion operating and capital budget and successfully championed a $548 million bond measure for the construction of new schools and renovations to existing ones. Under her guidance, the Office of Equity Affairs expanded to address systemic issues within the district, reflecting her commitment to dismantling racism and oppression in education.
Throughout her career, Johnson-Hostler has been appointed to several national committees, including former President Barack Obama's Children Who Witness Committee and Attorney General Eric Holder's National Advisory Committee. In these roles, she contributed to the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act and advocated for policies supporting survivors of sexual violence. Her extensive experience in advocacy, education, and public policy informs her legislative priorities, which focus on social justice, educational equity, and the protection of vulnerable populations.
